Historical Books
The American Girl historical books all show different significant times in the history of America from 9-year-old girls' points of view, and make learning history fun and interesting. The books were created as companion items for the American Girl company's historical dolls. Each doll has her own six-book series, and most of them also have several short-story length books and even a special mystery story or two! Some of the dolls have special books, such as craft books and cookbooks, included in their collections as well. Every book series has a year on the cover that ends in a 4 (for example, Julie's year is 1974 and Josefina's is 1824), but the timespan of any given series is about 2 to 2 1/2 years. Each book also includes a few pages of nonfictional historical tidbits at the back. Readers will see what lifestyles and challenges girls faced at each of these times, as well as how they spent their time and related to their families. You can read about Molly aiding the war effort during World War II, how Kit helps her family make ends meet during the Great Depression, or about Addy's daring escape from slavery in the Civil War, to name a few. The books are on a second-grade reading level, so elementary-aged girls can read the books independently and then act out the stories with the dolls and accessories. Adults may enjoy reading the books as well, and they make a great choice for parents and daughters to read together. There are also four American Girl movies based on the books of Samantha, Felicity, Molly, and Kit.
Advice & Activity Books
When the Just Like You doll collection was introduced by American Girl, many "Advice and Activity" books were written to go along with it. These books cover many topics and different fun activities, such as family relationships, good sportsmanship, travel games, and sleepover ideas. The Advice and Activity books are divided into five categories: Be Your Best, Body & Mind, Do It Yourself, Just for Fun, and Memories. These books show girls how to have a wonderful time doing interesting things, both on their own and with friends. They also give practical help in lots of areas, such as how to get along with friends and family members, how to excel in school, and even preparing for puberty and adulthood. |
