Molly (1944)
Molly McIntyre is one of the three original dolls that were introduced together when the American Girl company first began, along with Kirsten and Samantha. Molly has brown hair with a hint of red in it, smoky gray eyes that open and close, and a lively smile. She is the only American Girl doll with gray eyes. Molly has a soft cloth body and vinyl limbs and head. Older editions of the doll will have white cloth bodies, but newer ones are flesh-colored. Molly's head can turn from side to side, and her arms and legs are posable. She wears a navy/red/green argyle sweater, a dickey (shirtless collar that gives a layered look), navy faux wool skirt, white bloomers (historical underwear), white ankle socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Her accessory set includes a navy blue beret, a silver locket with a picture of her father inside, a red purse, a replica steel penny, and an embroidered handkerchief with Molly's name on it.
You can find many adorable outfits designed for Molly, as well as accessories and furniture, patterned after items from the 1940s. Some of Molly's special outfits are her summer camp uniform, her "Miss Victory" tap-dance costume, and her white birthday dress with layered ruffled sleeves that have a different color of trimming on each layer! A few of her accessories are her birthday cake with party treats, book bag and school supplies, and her dog, Bennett. Molly's furniture collection includes items like her wooden school desk, a bed with a red upholstered headboard that matches her bedspread, and a beautiful white "chifforobe" (closet) that can store both your Molly doll and her things. Molly also has a few unique furniture items that no other American Girl has: a pup tent for camping and a tap-dancing stage complete with sound effects!
Meet Molly's Friend Emily
Molly's collection includes a companion doll of the same size, named Emily Bennett. Emily is Molly's English friend who comes to live with her family for a while. Emily has her own clothes and accessories, and even her own book, Brave Emily. Girls can have extra fun playing with both dolls at once!
Read About Molly's Adventures
Molly has her very own six-book series, as well as several short-story length books and even a couple of special mystery stories! Molly is a smart, fun-loving girl growing up in Jefferson, Illinois during World War Two. She loses both parents to the war, in a sense, when her father joins the Army and her mother goes to work at the Red Cross. Molly and her siblings have to spend their evenings with their neighbor, the no-nonsense Mrs. Guilford, and Molly doesn't like any of these changes one bit! Molly's family has to learn how to get along and make adjustments during their difficulties, and she also discovers how to help others along the way. Perhaps the person she helps the most is her friend Emily, who comes to Illinois from England to escape the fighting there. Each book has a "Looking Back" section at the end, that tells about real life during Molly's time.
See Molly's Movie
American Girl has made a movie all about Molly, called Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front. It is based on several stories from Molly's books, and shows what life was like for children growing up during World War II.![]() |
