Josefina (1824)
Josefina Montoya is the sixth doll to be added to the American Girl historical collection. She has amber-brown eyes that open and close, straight, silky black hair, and a shy smile. The Josefina doll also has a soft cloth body and vinyl limbs and head. You can turn her head from side to side and pose her arms and legs. She is one of the few American Girl dolls that can wear earrings! Josefina wears a white short-sleeved blouse (also called a camisa), red calico skirt, moccasins, gold hoop earrings, and a blue ribbon with yellow flowers to put in her hair. Her accessory set has a striped shawl (rebozo), faux leather pouch, embroidered handkerchief, replica coin, and gold cross necklace.
Josefina has many other special outfits to wear, such as her yellow-and-black striped Christmas dress and mantilla (black lace veil), pink calico party dress with black Spencer jacket, and her birthday outfit, which includes a white ruffled blouse, turquoise embroidered skirt, and satin slippers. You can also purchase furniture and accessories designed just for her, patterned after authentic items that were used during Josefina's time. Her furniture collection includes pieces like her Mexican "sleigh" bed (called that because the corners of the frame curl outward like a sleigh), her table and chairs with "cornstalk" carvings, and a beautiful wooden storage chest with intricate carvings on the sides. Some of her accessories are her birthday shawl and fan, her weaving loom, and her doll, Nina. She even has her own pet, a baby goat named Sombrita, which means "little shadow". Any of these items would make playing with Josefina more fun and educational, or make a gorgeous display for her.
Read Josefina's Stories
Josefina has her very own six-book series that tell about her life and family. Her story is somewhat unique from the others in the American Girls Collection, since she grew up in New Mexico before it was part of America. However, it did become an American territory in 1850, during Josefina's lifetime, and later a state in 1912. Josefina is a shy, sweet girl who lives on a ranch with her three sisters and father. She learns how to handle grief and loss when her mother dies, and later welcomes her aunt, Tia Dolores, to help run the ranch and comfort the girls. She does her best to preserve precious memories of her mother while she learns new skills to help the family. She even plays the part of Maria in Las Posadas, her village's Christmas procession. Josefina's books are available in both English and Spanish. At the end of each book, you can read a "Looking Back" section that has historical information and photos about life during Josefina's time. Several short-story length books have been written about Josefina as well, and also a special mystery story!
