Emily (1944)
Emily Bennett is one of the Best Friends dolls; she is Molly McIntyre's friend from England, and the two dolls are fun to play with together! She has short copper-colored hair, crystal-blue eyes that open and close, and a shy smile. Emily's head and limbs are made of sturdy vinyl, and her body is soft cloth. Her arms and legs are posable and her head can turn from side to side. Emily wears an adorable blue dress with a cherry/flower print, and it has a red polka-dot sash to match her headband. She also wears knickers (historical underwear), red socks, and black T-strap shoes.
Emily's Special Things
You can purchase extra outfits and accessories designed just for Emily, patterned after items from the 1940s. Some of her other outfits are her green school recital dress, her bright purple Christmas dress, and a red and white tap-dance costume. Her special accessory set includes a white cardigan sweater, three "dog tags" on a string (army identification tags from World War I, given to her by her grandfather), a replica coin, a British ration book, and a scrapbook with pictures of the princesses of England inside it. Her other accessories are her puppy named Yank and her Flutophone (musical instrument similar to a clarinet), complete with carrying case and songbook.
Read About Emily's World
You can read all about Emily and how she lives through World War II in her book, Brave Emily. She has a unique story among the American Girls, since she only lives in America for a short time. During the war, many parents who lived in London were concerned for their children's safety, so they sent the children to the English countryside or sometimes even the United States. Emily is sent to the States and stays with Molly's family for a while. She has to get used to the "strange" customs of Americans, as well as learning values that people everywhere need, such as honesty and helping others. When Emily makes a big mistake in school, she needs Molly's help to make amends. This is the only book from Emily's viewpoint, but she is also mentioned in one of Molly's books, Happy Birthday, Molly! Each book has a "Looking Back" section at the end with historical information about real life during Molly's and Emily's time. Emily is also a character in the American Girl movie, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front.
